AI Settings
Open Chatbot → AI Settings to choose how the chatbot is billed: Limb AI credits (no API key) or your own key from OpenAI, Claude, or another provider. The models themselves still come from those vendors’ catalogs. Then pick a model, set how replies should sound, and test in the playground before the chatbot goes live.
Supported providers
You can use models from any of these services:
- Limb AI (credits; no API key)
- OpenAI
- Google Gemini
- Claude (Anthropic)
- DeepSeek
- Grok (xAI)
- OpenRouter
There is no separate Mistral (or Llama) provider button. To use Mistral, choose OpenRouter, paste your OpenRouter API key, then pick a Mistral model from the list. The same path covers other model families OpenRouter exposes. Guide: OpenRouter with a WordPress AI chatbot.
Limb AI credits
Limb AI is not a Limb-owned model. You still choose models from the catalog (OpenAI, Claude, and others). Limb bills that usage as AI credits for that WordPress site, so you do not create an OpenAI or Claude account or paste a key. Connecting those providers yourself is optional.
- On a live public website, Limb gives 100 free AI credits so you can run real chats before you buy anything.
- When those credits run out, buy a pack on the same screen: 500 credits for $5, 2,000 credits for $20, or 10,000 credits for $100. Checkout opens on wpaichatbot.com; after payment, the balance applies to this site and you return to AI Settings.
- Local / development sites (localhost,
.local, and similar) cannot receive free credits or buy packs. Use another provider and your own API key there.
One credit is roughly 20,000 tokens—about one typical support chat. That is a rough figure. It depends on which catalog model you pick under Limb AI: a small/fast model lasts longer; a larger model uses credits faster.
- 100 free credits — about 2 million tokens, or about 100 typical support chats
- 500 credits ($5) — about 10 million tokens, or about 500 typical support chats
- 2,000 credits ($20) — about 40 million tokens, or about 2,000 typical support chats
- 10,000 credits ($100) — about 200 million tokens, or about 10,000 typical support chats
Select Limb AI, pick a model, then click Save to connect Limb AI and load the credit bar. There is no Test API key step for Limb AI.
Connect your provider
- In the WordPress admin, go to Chatbot → AI Settings.
- Select the provider you use (Limb AI or a key-based provider).
- If you chose a key-based provider, paste your API key.
- Pick a model or keep the suggested default.
- Click Save. When you are ready to style the widget, continue to the Appearance tab.
Test API key
For OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, or OpenRouter: after you paste your API key, click Test API key to confirm the provider accepts the key. Skip this if you are using Limb AI.
AI instructions
The AI instructions field sets global guidance for the model: general role, tone, boundaries, and any rules that apply to every reply (for example, topics to avoid or how to represent your brand).
To discard edits and restore the built-in template, use Reset to default above the textarea.
Playground
Turn on Playground next to the AI Settings heading to open the chatbot playground on the same screen. You can chat with the assistant right away and see how it answers with your current provider, model, and instructions.
